Action Mapping for Performance Driven Learning
October 18 @ 10:15 a.m.
(Immediately following chapter meeting.)

Action Mapping, created by world renowned training designer Cathy Moore, provides a method for designing training based on performance goals, rather than knowledge. How many times have we heard, “Quick! Design some e-learning that has compelling activities and a real business impact!” What do we typically end up with? So much of e-learning is what the industry calls “page turners,” full of information and no actual practice for the job. Action mapping with e-learning allows us to take a step back and:

  • Identify the business goals we are trying to impact
  • Identify the tasks or behavior that is expected of the learner once they are on the job
  • Identify the practice they need in training to be able to perform these tasks
  • Identify the MINIMUM amount of information they need to support this practice

Action mapping is all about cutting out the extraneous information and objectives that do not impact the underlying business goals, and allowing the learner to practice what they will be expected to perform on the job. As e-learning and learning technology gurus, we need to not lose sight of the goals of training, which is to prepare the learner for the tasks they will need to perform. E-learning provides tools to allow practice; we just need to plan for it and use the tools we have to our advantage.
